TJ Maxx Return
Policy 2026
TJ Maxx allows 30 days for in-store returns and 40 days for online with an $11.99 mail-back fee. Same policy applies at Marshalls and HomeGoods, and you can return cross-store at any TJX brand. The big catch: original tags must be attached for full refund, TJX is stricter on this than most retailers. Below: the cross-store trick to skip the $11.99 fee.
The TJX brand family return rules
TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods all share the same parent company (TJX Companies) and follow the same return policy. Sierra and Sierra Trading Post are also TJX brands with similar terms.
The biggest perk of this shared system: you can return items to any TJX store regardless of where you bought them. Bought a shirt at Marshalls? Return it at TJ Maxx. Bought a vase at HomeGoods? Return it at any TJX brand. This is genuinely useful because TJX brand availability varies by region, your nearest TJX store might be a Marshalls even if you bought at TJ Maxx 200 miles away.
The 30-day window vs 40-day online window
TJX has slightly different return windows depending on where you bought:
In-store purchases: 30 days from purchase date. Bring the receipt and original tags. Refund to original payment method.
Online purchases (TJMaxx.com, Marshalls.com, HomeGoods.com): 40 days from order date. You can either:
- Return in-store at any TJX brand: Free, processed immediately, refund to original payment method
- Mail back via prepaid label: $11.99 per package fee deducted from your refund. Slower processing.
The math is clear: if there's a TJX store within driving distance, take the trip. The $11.99 mail-back fee applies to each package, so if you ordered multiple items in one shipment that you're returning, you pay $11.99 once. But two separate packages would mean $11.99 twice.

Tag rules, why TJX is strict
TJX is significantly stricter on apparel returns than most retailers because of how their merchandise is sourced. They buy closeouts, overstock, and specialty production runs from designer brands at deep discounts. The original price tags are essential to verifying the item came from TJX (and not from another store at full price, which would be a return fraud scheme).
Specifically:
- Original tags must be attached for full refund on apparel
- Detached tags: Likely denial or store credit at lowest recent price
- Worn or laundered: Almost always denied. TJX customer service has limited discretion here.
- Designer items: Authentication may be required for high-end items showing wear
For shoes: original box helps but isn't strictly required. Soles must show no significant wear.
Returning without a receipt at TJX
TJX accepts no-receipt returns but with significant restrictions:
- Government-issued photo ID required, this is enforced strictly
- Refund as merchandise credit only, no cash, no original-payment-method refund
- Credit at lowest sale price, not what you paid; TJX uses the lowest price the item sold for in the past 30 days
- Frequency limited: Multiple no-receipt returns in a year may trigger declined returns at the register
The system tracks no-receipt returns by ID. There's no published threshold but excessive use will eventually result in denials.
Holiday returns at TJX
For the most recent holiday season:
In-store purchases October 5 - December 24: Returnable through January 25 of the following year. Significant extension over the standard 30-day window.
Online purchases October 5 - December 24: Returnable via mail through February 4. The mail-back fee ($11.99/package) still applies.
Holiday returns require all the same documentation: receipt, original tags, ID for no-receipt scenarios. The extension only changes the deadline.
