Apple Return
Policy 2026
Apple's return window is a hard 14 days from delivery or pickup for everything they sell — iPhone, iPad, MacBook, AirPods, Apple Watch, accessories, all the same window. This is the tightest in mainstream retail. Engraved or personalized items are returnable but not exchangeable — refund only. AppleCare+ is separate from returns. Below: every category, the calculator, and the carrier-bought iPhone gotcha.
Why 14 days for everything
Apple's 14-day window is one of the tightest in mainstream retail — Best Buy gives 15 days standard (and 60 with Plus), Target gives 15 for Apple specifically, Costco gives a generous 90 days. So why does Apple itself only give 14?
The answer is consistency. Apple's policy is the same worldwide — 14 days in the US, 14 days in the EU, 14 days everywhere. Every other retailer's Apple-product window is benchmarked against this 14-day floor and then either matched (Target, Best Buy) or extended (Costco). When you buy direct from Apple, you're getting the floor, not the extension.
The engraved/personalized rule
Apple offers free laser engraving on iPad, AirPods, AirPods Max, Apple Pencil, and certain Watch bands. The engraving is genuinely fast (next-day shipping in many cases) but it changes the return policy:
- You CAN return the engraved item within 14 days for a refund — Apple doesn't trap you with a personalized device.
- You CANNOT exchange it. If you bought an engraved iPad and it has a defect, Apple will refund you so you can re-buy — but you can't swap it for a different working one because the engraving makes it non-resellable.
- Practical impact: if you engrave your name on AirPods and they have a battery defect, the refund process takes longer than a straight swap would have. Consider whether you really need the engraving.
Apple return windows by product
Everything is 14 days. What varies is how the return is inspected at processing:
| Product | Window | Inspection notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (any model) | 14 days | Original box, accessories, SIM removed. Activation lock disabled (sign out of iCloud). |
| iPad (any model) | 14 days | Original box. iCloud signed out. Apple Pencil included if bundled. |
| MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro | 14 days | All original cables and accessories. Erase macOS or hand it back factory-fresh. |
| Apple Watch (any model) | 14 days | Band(s), charger, box. Unpair from iPhone before returning. |
| AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max | 14 days | Case, ear tips, charging cable. Apple is strict about ear-tip cleanliness on opened Pro. |
| HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV | 14 days | Power cable, original box. |
| Accessories (cables, cases, chargers) | 14 days | Generally OK if undamaged. Open packaging fine. |
| Beats headphones (Apple-owned brand) | 14 days | Same as Apple proper. All accessories needed. |
| Engraved iPad / AirPods / Pencil | 14 days REFUND ONLY | Cannot exchange — refund and re-buy if needed. |
| Activated Apple Gift Card | Non-returnable | Unactivated cards in original packaging can be returned within 14 days. |
| App Store / iTunes / digital content | Non-returnable | Refunds via reportaproblem.apple.com — case-by-case. |
Carrier-bought iPhone: not Apple's policy
The single most-common Apple return mistake: assuming Apple's 14-day policy covers an iPhone you bought from a carrier. It doesn't. If your iPhone came via Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or any other carrier (online or in their stores), the carrier sets the return window — Apple has no say.
| Where you bought iPhone | Return window | Where to return |
|---|---|---|
| apple.com or Apple Store | 14 days | Apple — any store or by mail. |
| Verizon (in-store or online) | 30 days* | Verizon — restocking fee may apply. |
| AT&T (in-store or online) | 14 days | AT&T — restocking fee may apply. |
| T-Mobile (in-store or online) | 14 days | T-Mobile — restocking fee may apply. |
| Best Buy (Apple Authorized Reseller) | 15 days | Best Buy — see their policy. |
| Costco | 90 days | Costco — most generous Apple window in retail. |
| Target | 15 days | Target — does not extend with Circle Card. |
*Verizon's window is 30 days but with a restocking fee that can be $35–$50 on opened phones. Verizon also limits return to once-per-line per 12 months in some markets.
AppleCare+ is separate — and you should know what it covers
AppleCare+ is a paid extended-protection plan, not an extension of the return window. People conflate the two. Quick clarity:
- Returns (free, automatic): 14 days from purchase, for any reason. This is the topic of this page.
- AppleCare+ (paid extension): up to 2–3 years of accidental-damage repair coverage, beyond the 1-year manufacturer warranty. Bought separately at $129–$299+ depending on product.
- AppleCare itself is also returnable — within 30 days of purchase if unused, refunded prorated if you have used some of the period.
If you're past the 14-day return window and your iPhone has a defect, you're in warranty/AppleCare territory, not return territory.
Holiday extension
Apple typically extends the 14-day window for holiday gift purchases. The exact dates change each year, but the pattern is consistent: items purchased between mid-November and December 25 are eligible for return through approximately January 8 of the following year.
Apple announces the exact dates on apple.com/shop/help/returns each November. The extension applies to all Apple-direct purchases — apple.com, Apple Store retail, Apple Store app — but does not override carrier or reseller policies on iPhones bought elsewhere.
Refund processing speed
- In-store return to credit card: immediate at register, posts in 5–7 business days.
- Apple Cash refund: immediate to your Apple Cash balance.
- Apple Gift Card refund: immediate, ready to use right away.
- Mailed return to apple.com: 5–7 business days after Apple receives, then card-posting time.
- Apple Trade In (separate flow): trade-in credit issued after device inspection, typically 2–3 weeks.
