Best Buy's standard return window is just 15 days, the shortest of any major retailer. My Best Buy Plus members get 60 days ($49.99/year). Activatable devices like phones are stuck at 14 days regardless with a $45 restocking fee. The membership math, restocking fees, and category windows below.
The 15-day window is unusually short. Here's how to handle it.
Best Buy's standard 15-day return window is the tightest among major US retailers. For comparison: Walmart and Target give you 90 days, Amazon gives 30, even Apple's own stores allow 14 days. Best Buy at 15 is barely longer.
Why does this matter? Because most people don't fully test electronics until they've used them for a couple weeks. By then, Best Buy's window is closed. A laptop that runs hot, headphones with a comfort issue, a TV with a slight color cast, by the time you notice, you're often past day 15.
Two ways to handle it:
1. Set aggressive reminders. Day 1, 7, 12, and 14. Most missed Best Buy returns happen because the buyer simply forgot the deadline.
2. Get the membership. My Best Buy Plus is $49.99/year and extends most returns to 60 days. For one big-ticket return, it pays for itself instantly.
Watch out
The 15-day clock starts the day you receive the item, not the day you bought it. For online orders, that's the delivery date. For in-store purchases, it's the purchase date. Track the right starting point.
Plus membership math: when it's worth it
My Best Buy Plus costs $49.99/year. My Best Buy Total costs $179.99/year and includes Plus benefits plus tech support, expert assistance, and other perks. Both extend most returns to 60 days.
The breakeven calculation is simple: if there's any chance you'll return one item over $50 in the next year, the Plus membership pays for itself. The 45 extra days of decision time is worth substantially more than $49.99 if it lets you avoid being stuck with a wrong-purchase $1,200 TV.
Plus member benefits beyond returns:
Member-only pricing on select products throughout the year
Free 2-day shipping on most items
Extended warranty discounts
Early access to Black Friday and major sale events
Pro tip
Buy the Plus membership before your big purchase, not after. The 60-day window applies based on your status at time of purchase. Adding membership later doesn't retroactively extend the return window on an item you already bought.
Activatable devices: the 14-day brick wall
Cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, and cellular wearables (smartwatches with cellular) all have a hard 14-day return window regardless of your membership tier. Plus and Total members do not get the 60-day extension on these.
Worse, opened activatable devices carry a $45 restocking fee at return. Prepaid phones are excluded from the fee. The fee is waived in eight states (AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK, SC) by state consumer protection law.
One exception: Verizon-activated devices have a 30-day return window for all customers, regardless of Best Buy membership status. This is due to Verizon's specific carrier agreement.
The 15% restocking fee category
Best Buy charges a 15% restocking fee on opened items in this category list (as of February 23, 2026 policy update):
Drones
Digital cameras and camera lenses
Camcorders (including action cameras)
Electric bikes, electric mopeds, premium scooters
Mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs
Leg and body recovery systems
Projectors and projector screens
Special order products
Same eight-state exemption applies (no fee in AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK, SC). The fee is calculated as 15% of the item's purchase price, not a flat amount, for an $800 drone, that's $120.

Common questions
Best Buy gives standard customers 15 days from receipt of the item, the shortest standard return window of any major US retailer. My Best Buy Plus and Total members get 60 days for most items. Activatable devices like cell phones have a 14-day window regardless of membership tier.
If there's any chance you'll return one item over $50 in the next year, yes. Plus costs $49.99/year and extends most return windows from 15 to 60 days. For a single big-ticket purchase, the membership pays for itself by giving you 45 extra days of decision time.
Most items, but not activatable devices (phones, cellular tablets, hotspots, smartwatches with cellular), those stay at 14 days. Marketplace items from third-party sellers are also excluded from the 60-day extension.
Yes, on specific categories. Activatable devices (phones, cellular tablets, hotspots, smartwatches): flat $45 restocking fee. Drones, digital cameras, camera lenses, camcorders, e-bikes, e-scooters, projectors, special orders: 15% restocking fee. No restocking fees if the item is unopened or if you're in AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK, or SC.
Yes, within your return window. Include all original accessories, manuals, and packaging. Missing items result in a deduction from your refund. Some categories carry restocking fees on opened items (see above).
In-store returns process the refund immediately to your original payment method. Mail returns take 7-10 business days after Best Buy receives the item, plus up to 10 more days for your bank to post the refund. Verify with your card issuer if it takes longer.
Verizon devices capable of being activated have a 30-day return period for all customers, regardless of Best Buy membership tier. This is due to Verizon's specific carrier agreement and overrides the standard 14-day activatable device window.
Yes, with a valid government-issued photo ID. Best Buy can also look up purchases through your My Best Buy account, the credit card used, or your phone number. Without proof of purchase, you may receive store credit at the item's current selling price rather than a refund.
No. Trading cards (Pokémon, Magic the Gathering, sports cards, etc.) are non-returnable as final sale items, due to widespread resale-driven return fraud.
Marketplace Products from third-party sellers on BestBuy.com generally follow the same return policy as Best Buy direct items, but the Plus/Total 60-day extension does NOT apply. Marketplace items follow the standard 15-day window. Check the specific seller's policy on the product page.
Best Buy can deny returns for items past their window, items not in like-new condition, missing major contents, or unsanitary items. If denied, you can call 1-888-BEST-BUY (1-888-237-8289) for escalation. Major appliances must be inspected before delivery acceptance, past that, returns become extremely difficult.
Best Buy announces holiday extensions each fall, typically covering purchases from late October through December 31 with returns accepted through mid-to-late January. Plus/Total members get longer extension windows than standard customers. Activatable devices never get holiday extensions.
