Macy's Return
Policy 2026
Macy's standard return window is 30 days, tighter than competitors like Target (90) or Kohl's (180). Several traps catch shoppers: Apple products are just 14 days, designer apparel only 7 days, and many sale items are Final Sale. The Star Rewards Gold tier doubles your window to 60 days on most apparel.
Why Macy's policy looks generous but isn't
Macy's headline 30-day return window seems reasonable until you compare it to Walmart's 90 days, Target's 90 days, or Kohl's 180 days. Macy's is on the tighter end of department store returns, with several gotchas that catch first-time shoppers off guard.
The four most common surprises:
- Apple products: 14 days only. Bought an iPad at Macy's during a sale? You have less than half the time you'd have at Best Buy with Plus membership.
- Designer apparel: 7 days. Premium brand items have a brutally tight window. Read the tags carefully at purchase.
- Final Sale items: never returnable. Many sale and clearance items are marked Final Sale, no exceptions, even if defective (warranty path only).
- Worn-once apparel: judgment call. Macy's customer service has discretion on items showing wear. With tags removed and clear use, returns are often denied.
The Star Rewards member tier benefits
Macy's Star Rewards is the loyalty program (free to join). Three tier levels with progressively better return-related perks:
Silver Star Rewards (free, basic): Standard 30-day returns. Members get receipt-free purchase lookup via account.
Gold Star Rewards ($800+ annual spend): Free shipping on orders, plus extended 60-day return window on most apparel and accessories, doubling the standard window.
Platinum Star Rewards ($1,200+ annual spend): Same 60-day window plus higher tier perks like free alterations and priority customer service for return disputes.
For frequent Macy's shoppers, the Gold tier's 60-day apparel window is the most return-relevant benefit, it transforms Macy's from "tight returns" to "competitive with Target."

Returning fashion: the apparel-specific rules
Macy's has specific apparel return rules that don't apply to home goods or beauty:
Original tags preferred. Apparel without tags can be returned but is more likely to be flagged or denied if it shows any wear.
Worn-but-not-laundered: Macy's accepts try-on wear (you tried it on at home, decided no). Heavy use, visible stains, body odor, or pet hair will likely result in denial.
Altered apparel: Final sale once altered. Macy's offers free alterations for Gold/Platinum members, these alterations are not reversible for return purposes.
Swimsuits and intimates: Hygienic strip must be intact for swim. Intimates often non-returnable depending on category.
Designer items: 7-day window only. Authentication may be required for high-end items showing any wear.
Cosmetics and beauty: the 60-day exception
Macy's beauty department gives you 60 days to return cosmetics and skincare, double the standard 30 days. This is uniquely generous in the department store space.
Even better: opened, used cosmetics can be returned. If you bought a foundation that didn't match your skin tone after testing it home, you can return the partially-used item within 60 days. Few competitors are this lenient.
The reasoning: Macy's wants beauty customers to test products at home. The lenient return policy reduces purchase anxiety and drives repeat business in this high-margin category.
Wedding and gift registry returns
Macy's wedding registry items have a special 180-day return window from the event date. This applies to:
- All items registered for the wedding
- Items received after the wedding
- Duplicate gifts (returnable for store credit)
- Cash registry contributions (not refundable per registry policy)
Bring a copy of the registry confirmation or look it up via the Macys.com registry account.
For non-wedding gifts: standard 30-day window applies, with a gift receipt needed for full refund. Without a gift receipt, store credit at the item's current selling price.
Refund speed at Macy's
- Cash refunds (in-store): immediate
