Sephora Return
Policy 2026
Sephora's return window is 30 days for most products, including gently-used items with roughly 75–80% remaining. The old 31–60 day grace period ended in April 2025 — there is now a hard 30-day cutoff. Sephora at Kohl's purchases must go back to Kohl's. Below: every category, the gently-used rule, and a deadline calculator.
The "gently-used" rule that makes Sephora unique
Sephora is one of the very few mainstream retailers that will accept opened and gently-used beauty products within their return window. If you bought a foundation that turned out to be the wrong shade, or a serum that didn't work for your skin, Sephora will still take it back as long as roughly 75–80% of the product remains and you're within 30 days.
Most retailers consider opened beauty "final sale" the moment the seal breaks. Sephora's policy is built around the assumption that you genuinely can't tell if a beauty product works without trying it — so they make that risk-free up to a point.
Sephora return windows by category
The 30-day window applies almost uniformly — what varies is how each category is inspected at return:
| Category | Window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Makeup (lipstick, foundation, mascara, eyeshadow) | 30 days | Opened OK if ~75–80% remains. |
| Skincare (cleanser, moisturizer, serum, mask) | 30 days | Opened OK. Same product-volume rule. |
| Fragrance (perfume, cologne, EDP/EDT) | 30 days | Opened OK if mostly full. |
| Haircare (shampoo, conditioner, treatment) | 30 days | Opened OK. |
| Beauty tech (Dyson Airwrap, Foreo, hot tools) | 30 days | Must be sanitized, undamaged, with original accessories. |
| Gift sets and curated kits | 30 days | Generally must be returned complete. |
| Gift cards (activated) | Non-returnable | Inactive/un-purchased cards can sometimes be refunded — call ahead. |
| Personalized or engraved items | Non-returnable | Custom packaging or names cannot be refunded. |
| Final-sale clearance items | Non-returnable | Marked at checkout. Read tags before buying. |
The Sephora at Kohl's gotcha
Sephora operates shop-in-shop counters inside roughly 1,000 Kohl's locations across the US. Despite the Sephora branding and identical assortment, those purchases live under Kohl's' inventory and payment systems — not Sephora's. The practical impact for returns:
- If you bought a Sephora item at Kohl's: the return goes to Kohl's (within Kohl's 180-day policy, not Sephora's 30 days). Bringing it to a standalone Sephora store will be refused.
- If you bought at a standalone Sephora or sephora.com: return goes to Sephora under the 30-day policy. Kohl's will not accept it.
- The receipt tells you which: the header shows either Sephora directly or "Sephora at Kohl's" with a Kohl's transaction number.
What changed in April 2025
For years Sephora had what shoppers informally called the "31–60 day grace period" — returns after the 30-day window were accepted as store credit / merchandise voucher rather than a full refund. As of April 24, 2025, that grace period is gone. Today the policy is a hard cutoff:
- Days 1–30: full refund to original payment method (or gently-used OK).
- Day 31 onward: not accepted — no store credit, no merchandise voucher.
The change followed a multi-year increase in resale-driven returns and "haul" content where shoppers would return huge bags of partially-used product. The 30-day cap is now strict for everyone, Beauty Insider tier notwithstanding.
Beauty Insider doesn't extend returns — but helps in other ways
Sephora's three-tier Beauty Insider program (Insider, VIB, VIB Rouge) does not change the 30-day return window. What it does affect:
- Free shipping thresholds: Insider gets free standard shipping over $50; VIB at $35; VIB Rouge on every order. Helps when returning by mail — free outbound shipping makes the return-shipping flow cheaper.
- Purchase history lookup: any Insider account-tied purchase is in the app's history forever. No need to find a paper receipt — show your account barcode at the register and the associate looks it up.
- Refund timing: often slightly faster for higher tiers because of dedicated customer-service queues, but the official posting time to your card is the same.
Refund processing speed
- In-store refund to credit/debit card: immediate at the register, posts to your card in 5–7 business days.
- Sephora gift card refund: immediate, ready to use right away.
- Online return by mail: 7–10 business days after Sephora receives the package, then standard card posting time on top.
- Klarna or Afterpay purchases: the underlying installment is reversed, can take an extra 1–2 days.
- PayPal: 3–5 days after Sephora processes the refund on their side.
