Return Policy Guide

Sephora Return
Policy 2026

Sephora's return window is 30 days for most products, including gently-used items with roughly 75–80% remaining. The old 31–60 day grace period ended in April 2025 — there is now a hard 30-day cutoff. Sephora at Kohl's purchases must go back to Kohl's. Below: every category, the gently-used rule, and a deadline calculator.

The "gently-used" rule that makes Sephora unique

Sephora is one of the very few mainstream retailers that will accept opened and gently-used beauty products within their return window. If you bought a foundation that turned out to be the wrong shade, or a serum that didn't work for your skin, Sephora will still take it back as long as roughly 75–80% of the product remains and you're within 30 days.

Most retailers consider opened beauty "final sale" the moment the seal breaks. Sephora's policy is built around the assumption that you genuinely can't tell if a beauty product works without trying it — so they make that risk-free up to a point.

Pro tip The 75–80% rule isn't published as a hard number — it's at associate discretion. Be visibly honest about why you're returning ("the shade was off", "broke me out") and you'll almost never be denied. The denials happen with near-empty bottles.

The Sephora at Kohl's gotcha

Sephora operates shop-in-shop counters inside roughly 1,000 Kohl's locations across the US. Despite the Sephora branding and identical assortment, those purchases live under Kohl's' inventory and payment systems — not Sephora's. The practical impact for returns:

Watch out Kohl's 180-day return window is actually more generous than Sephora's 30 days, so the gotcha cuts both ways. If you have a Sephora-at-Kohl's purchase from 60 days ago, don't write it off — Kohl's will still take it.

What changed in April 2025

For years Sephora had what shoppers informally called the "31–60 day grace period" — returns after the 30-day window were accepted as store credit / merchandise voucher rather than a full refund. As of April 24, 2025, that grace period is gone. Today the policy is a hard cutoff:

The change followed a multi-year increase in resale-driven returns and "haul" content where shoppers would return huge bags of partially-used product. The 30-day cap is now strict for everyone, Beauty Insider tier notwithstanding.

Beauty Insider doesn't extend returns — but helps in other ways

Sephora's three-tier Beauty Insider program (Insider, VIB, VIB Rouge) does not change the 30-day return window. What it does affect:

Common questions

Sephora's return window is 30 days from purchase. The 31–60 day grace period that previously gave store credit was eliminated on April 24, 2025 — there is now a hard 30-day cutoff for everyone, regardless of Beauty Insider tier.
Yes. Sephora is among the few mainstream retailers that accept opened beauty products. The unwritten rule is roughly 75–80% of the product remaining. Most associates accept used items when the customer is honest about why (wrong shade, didn't work for their skin).
It ended April 24, 2025. Previously, returns made between day 31 and day 60 received store credit or a merchandise voucher. Now nothing is accepted after day 30. The change was driven by years of fraud and resale-driven returns.
No. Sephora-at-Kohl's purchases must go back to Kohl's, not Sephora. They live under Kohl's inventory and payment systems despite the Sephora branding. Bring the item to Kohl's and you'll get Kohl's 180-day return window, which is actually more generous.
Activated gift cards are non-returnable. Inactive cards still in original packaging can sometimes be refunded if you call customer service ahead of time, but it's case-by-case.
Start the return in your Sephora.com account or app — Sephora generates a prepaid USPS or UPS label. Pack the item, drop it off, and the refund processes 7–10 business days after they receive it. Beauty Insider members above the Insider tier get free return shipping on all online orders.
Yes, within 30 days. The device must be sanitized (wipe down attachments), undamaged, and ideally returned with the original box and all accessories. Sephora will inspect at the register before processing the refund.
No. Free samples, deluxe samples, and Beauty Insider birthday gifts are not eligible for return or refund. If you received them with a purchase you're now returning, you keep the samples.
No. Final-sale items are clearly marked at checkout and on the product page. These include some clearance items and discontinued products. Read the tags carefully — final-sale items are non-returnable even within 30 days.
In-store refunds post to your card in 5–7 business days. Mailed returns take 7–10 days after Sephora receives the package, plus standard card-posting time. Klarna and Afterpay refunds may take an extra 1–2 days due to platform batching.
No. Personalized items (engraved fragrances, custom bottles, monogrammed packaging) are non-returnable because they cannot be resold. This includes most made-to-order luxury fragrance customizations.
Yes, by your Beauty Insider account or by the credit/debit card you used. Excessive no-receipt returns can result in your account being flagged or restricted. If you don't have your account barcode or original payment method, Sephora may still process the return at the item's lowest recent selling price as merchandise credit.
