Dick's Sporting Goods gives 90 days for most items with proof of purchase — but there are big asterisks. Electronics and fitness equipment drop to 30 days. The 24-hour bike rule — shortest window in retail
This is the single most-missed part of Dick's policy. Buy a bike from Dick's and you have 24 hours from purchase or delivery to inspect it and initiate a return. After that, no returns — only manufacturer warranty for defects.
Why so short: bikes are high-value items that get used outdoors, accumulate visible wear quickly, and have a strong secondhand market. The 24-hour window forces you to inspect before riding seriously.
- What to check immediately: frame integrity, brake function, gear shifting, tire pressure, included accessories (helmet if bundled, manuals, warranty card).
- Test ride is OK: a single inspection ride around a parking lot is fine. A multi-mile ride or trail use voids the return.
- Bikes shipped to home: the 24-hour clock starts at delivery, not purchase. If your bike arrives Tuesday at 4 PM, you have until Wednesday at 4 PM.
- After 24 hours: manufacturer warranty only for actual defects. Aesthetic or "I changed my mind" reasons are no longer accepted.

The Yeezy exclusion — Dick's-specific
Of all major sporting-goods retailers selling Yeezy-branded footwear (the Adidas-Kanye West collaboration line), Dick's is the only chain with a blanket non-returnable policy on Yeezys. The exclusion is per-SKU and applies whether the shoes are unworn, in original packaging, or never opened.
The reason isn't published, but the timing aligns with the broader Yeezy market disruption in 2022–2023 (Adidas terminating the partnership, then resuming sales). Dick's appears to have built the exclusion to insulate against speculative buying-and-returning that ramps up in volatile sneaker markets.
Firearms and ammunition — never returnable
Once a firearm has been transferred under the federal background-check (Form 4473) process, it cannot be returned to the retailer. This is true at every retailer that sells firearms — but it's especially worth knowing at Dick's because they're a top-3 US firearms retailer by volume.
- Firearms: non-returnable once the background check completes and the transfer happens. If you change your mind before the 4473 is finalized, the deal can be voided.
- Ammunition: non-returnable for safety reasons. Even unopened, in original packaging, never accepted back.
- Defective items: handled via manufacturer warranty. The gun maker (not Dick's) processes the repair or replacement.
The "test indoors only" rule for shoes & apparel
Dick's standard 90-day window on athletic apparel and shoes comes with an unspoken caveat: the items must look unworn or only-indoor-tested when returned. The associate inspects for:
- Outdoor sole wear: dirt, grass stains, scuffs from concrete or trail. A clear sign the shoes went outside.
- Sweat staining on apparel: deodorant marks, body oil traces, washing-machine signs.
- Pet hair or visible debris: shows the item was worn for a workout, not just tried on.
If you bought running shoes and want to know if they fit, walk around your house on carpet — never outside. For workout apparel, try on with deodorant off and original tags attached. Items that fail this inspection get rejected at the register; manager appeals are rare to win on this category.
ScoreCard rewards and purchase tracking
Dick's ScoreCard (the free loyalty program) links every purchase to your account, making no-receipt returns much easier:
- With ScoreCard: the associate can look up any purchase made under your account — credit card, debit card, or paid in cash with ScoreCard scanned.
- Without ScoreCard: bring the original payment card; the associate can search by card.
- Truly no-receipt: Dick's may accept the return at the item's lowest recent selling price as merchandise credit, but they track no-receipt returns by ID and limit them.
Refund processing speed
- In-store to original card: immediate, posts in 3–5 business days.
- Dick's merchandise credit / gift card: immediate, ready to use.
- Mailed online return: 7–10 business days after Dick's receives, then card-posting time.
- PayPal: 3–5 days after Dick's processes on their side.
